Here are a few:. Hey, following the job market for GIS related positions, I realized that there seems to be a high demand for employees that are convenient in using MapInfo. Especially private companies offering geo marketing services seem to require some expertise in MapInfo. Up to now, I never used MapInfo and I'm wondering what it's advantages and disadvantages are. Is it intuitive? Can it style exceptional maps?

Personally, I mainly got in touch with ArcMap and QGIS so it would be especially interesting for me, if anyone could compare the software. I use both ArcGIS and Mapinfo on a daily basis so I'll have a crack at this. As I understand it, Mapinfo was (at one stage) the heavier hitter amongst geologists and hydrogeologists due to its Discover and Discover 3D extensions which were built specifically for users in these professions. At the time, there wasn't much out there in the GIS world that specialised in processing the associated datasets that you'd get with these lines of work until Mapinfo came along. ESRI now have their own 3D analyst and spatial analyst extensions which perform many of the same functions, however Discover and Discover 3D still beat to them to the pip in terms of geology data processing. Creating cross sections, interpolating between geology layers etc.

At least, that's the consensus I hear from other people I speak to in my field. Mapinfo and Discover are also cheaper than ArcGIS/ Scene and the other extensions you'd want with ArcGIS. There's another program out there now called Leapfrog which goes further again in terms of geology and hydrogeology data analysis and processing. Carvin v3 midi setup logic pro. Mapinfo can be quite clunky in my opinion, and doesn't feel quite as 'polished' as ArcGIS. (It does have a dynamic scale bar though, although the labelling function is still a bit rubbish).

In saying that, I use Mapinfo more often and have gotten accustomed to figuring out workarounds and bug fixes! I find Mapinfo easy enough to use - it has it's own quirks like Arc, but if you're a daily user you'll pick it up quickly enough. As for why it's popular in companies, see above and below:. Cheaper than Arc. Geared towards geologists/ hydrogeologists (once upon a time anyway). To be honest, MapInfo fells very dated and limited to me.

I think the main reason it is still around is because it used to be good. But it hasn't kept up. Examples of its poor quality include no dynamic scale bars. Poor cartographic output. Lack of raster processing. Lack of continued improvement.

Poor format support. Weird spatial database support (thought in some ways it's pretty neat). But part of my reluctance on using it is that it is a slightly different paradigm to ArcGIS abd QGIS. Just like Manifold or geomedia or uDIG are different.
