Badger 1 is the direct replacement of your Badger 1-81 disposer. However, please take note that your disposer has threads for its discharge outlet. All of our Badger disposers today use a flange and bolt connection. Kindly check if the existing disposer has a tailpipe shaped like a 'J' that comes off the disposer and goes down to connect to your plumbing; or if you have a horizontal tube attached to the discharge of the disposer which connects the disposer to the other side of the sink. If you have a 'J' tube, then the tailpipe provided with any Badger disposers should line up with your current plumbing.
If you have a straight pipe type application, then you will need an additional 5/8' for the straight tube. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact us through insinkeratorfeedback@emerson.com or call InSinkErator AnswerLine at 1 (800) 558-5700.

All Insinkerator models use the same sink mount so if your's is still in good shape you can get any Insinkerator disposer you want, not just the Badgers. Look at the product size dimensions and compare to what you already have. It's the pipes underneath that made need length adjustment. If your Badger is really old and rusted through, the disposer may break off instead of twist off and it may be impossible to replace only the disposer part. It's not that hard to replace the sink mount but it does take time and plumbers putty.
Rated 1 out of 5 by Danimal from Barely 2 years on the job, Badger 1/3 HP failed. Pretty disappointed with this Badger garbage disposal. Sure it's easy to install (most are these days), and someone's tip about using the Jack from the car, is brilliant and makes these installs easy.
But I sporadically used this thing, if I had to guesstimate on average maybe 1-2 days a week and its already toast? How convenient for a 1 year warranty. So at minimum 50 uses with a maximum of 100 uses, and it's dead. I purchased a 1/2 HP from Moen (same $89 price), that comes with the power cable attached already. Unlike this Badger where one has to purchase the $12 power cable on top of it being 16.667% less powerful.
I cannot vouch for the Moen just yet, time will tell, but this Badger disappointed me. Good luck if you buy it. Rated 2 out of 5 by Mariano9 from When it does not fail it is a great product I rated in Overall Rating and Quality only fair because the previous one, same brand and product started to leak from the motor casing. It did not leak from water connections or any other place. It started to leak about a couple of years after we bought it, and it would only leak a few drops occasionally.
The under cabinet was always humid or wet. I checked for leaks several times with water faucets open and not a single drop was visible. It was until I discovered the leak only happened when we operated the InSinkErator, And it happened accidentally because my wife operated the motor while I was checking for leaks, then I noticed it exactly on the backside, very difficult to find.
I will attach a couple of pictures so you can see for yourself. Rated 2 out of 5 by Giovanni from Item was OK, however, I was disappointed that it took. Item was OK, however, I was disappointed that it took much longer to receive it than promised (web site stated I would receive it by Jun 23, if ordered within the next 2+ hours; instead, I got in on the 26th-I ordered on June 20th. I could have gotten the same item from Amazon at the same price but within 2 days! Much more disappointing was discovering that the disposal was missing the power cord; luckily I had kept the old one handy so I had to remove and reinstall the cable onto the new disposal. Also disappointing was finding out that the needed 'plumber putty' was not included in the package-had to stop installation and drive to town to find a plumber and get an entire bucket when only a small amount (ring) was needed.
Recommend the manufacturer include all required items in the package for a complete assembly.
